About Our Choirs

SING THE NORTH is a family of four choirs: two Recording Choirs, a virtual Kitchen-Party Choir, and an in-person Summer Festival Chorus. You are welcome in all our choirs. We are looking forward to singing with you!

SING THE NORTH (STN) is our flagship Recording Choir. We meet online to sing choral music by Canadian composers or other music we love. We take field trips on the STN Virtual Choir Tour Bus to learn more about the people and places we are singing about. Singers submit audio and sometimes video recordings which we use to create our final video performance.

STN Ice is our Recording Choir for cutting-edge choral music. We meet online to sing unusual or innovative pieces that will challenge and inspire you. Singers submit audio recordings that are included in our final video. STN Ice is the natural home of sound lovers.

STN Fridays is our kitchen party choir - really a casual sing-along in the STN Virtual Kitchen in the East-coast folk tradition. There is no music to practice, and nothing to record, but there is a warm welcome for you at our virtual kitchen door and a place for you to sing with us around the table. We send out song sheets and chords in advance of the live sessions so you can sing and play along. Each kitchen party features a different special guest.

The STN Summer Festival Chorus meets in person in the third week of July in beautiful Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island off the West Coast of Canada on Coast Salish Traditional Territory. We gather for a week-long summer choral intensive which culminates in a live performance. Singers perform in our Summer Festival Chorus and have the chance to sing in chamber choirs as well to hone their ensemble skills. Our Festival Chorus is led by a different Visiting Conductor each year, and we also include a Feature Composer as well as a special team of pianists, coaches, and workshop clinicians.

All our choirs are all led by our Artistic Director and conductor, Kathryn Whitney. who works together with videographer and singer Stephen Ross to create our audio and video recordings for our two Recording Choirs.

You are welcome in all our choirs. To join us, simply register to any project or course and check your email for your project guide, which contains everything you need to join us and sing.

We are looking forward to singing with you!
