Why Narvaez Bay? - Music that gives voice to the ocean
Narvaez Bay is a composition that translates the real-life movements of the sun, moon, and ocean into a musical composition for SAB chorus.
The piece uses actual data from one year of solar, lunar, and tidal positions recorded in a single location, Narvaez Bay, a large body of water by Saturna Island in the traditional territory of the Coast Salish people off the West Coast of Canada.
What does it sound like?

Visionary Artists
Created by artist Mark Timmings and composed by musician Stephen Morris & Mark Timmings, Narvaez Bay offers singers a unique aesthetic insight into the mystery and majesty of the astronomical forces that have been maintaining balance and sustaining life on the earth for billions of years.
With different voices singing the parts of the sun, moon, and tides, the score of Narvaez Bay starts on January 1. With data from one day's movements in each bar, the 18-minute piece progresses through all 12 months until it reaches its resounding conclusion on December 31.
Sing the movement of the Sun, Moon, and Tides
Join us for the beauty of the piece, for the unique experience of singing from the inside of astronomical movements, or for the work's hugely significant contribution to environmental awareness for Earth Day.
All are welcome on the project, whether you wish to join us as a Singer, or a non-singing Supporter. Singers & Supporters are welcome at all live sessions.
How does it work?
This project is led by dynamic and friendly STN Artistic Director Kathryn Whitney
Singers meet live on Zoom for full-choir rehearsals and sectionals by voice type to help you learn your parts. The project also features a live interview with creator Mark Timmings, and a virtual choir field trip to Saturna Island to stand on the beach of the bay that inspired the composition.
The project will result in a film about Narvaez Bay featuring an AUDIO recording by the singers on this project. We aim to give the film its world premiere on the SING THE NORTH YouTube channel on EARTH DAY, 2023.
Project Dates: March 4-18, Recordings due March 28.
